What is counselling?

Many people who decide to seek counselling help are often unclear about exactly what is involved.  The counsellor will encourage you to talk about what is troubling you and listen carefully to what you have to say.  The aim is not for the counsellor to tell you what to do, but to help you to become clearer about the extent and affect of your problem and so enable you to recognize a possible solution.  The counsellor will help you to make connections in order to work towards your own solution, one that you judge will work for you.

How do I get started?
If you decide you would like to try counselling then an initial assessment will be arranged for you in order to meet the counsellor and decide if you wish to continue the process.  There is no obligation on your part to continue at this stage.  It is your opportunity to see if counselling is right for you.  After the initial assessment, the counsellor will agree a contract with you regarding the frequency and number of sessions required and the way forward.

How are meetings arranged?

Your counsellor will agree session times and dates with you.  If for any reason you are unable to attend a session, please give at least 24 hours notice, otherwise you may be charged.

How long does the session last and how often does counselling take place?
The session lasts for 50 mins .  I usually see clients on a weekly basis to allow for continuity, but this can be varied if necessary, due to work commitments, holidays  etc.
How much does it cost?
Counselling sessions cost £40.  Prices for supervision of individuals and groups can be provided on application.
Is it confidential?
Counselling is confidential with the exception of where the counsellor feels that you may be at risk of harming yourself or others.  In this case the counsellor would discuss this with you first if possible and then seek help for you from your GP or other appropriate sources.  This is in line with the BACP ethical framework for counsellors.
How long will it take?
The duration of the counselling depends entirely on the needs of the client. Sometimes only a few sessions are needed to ease your situation or if deeper issues emerge a contract for longer term work can be discussed.  In any event, the decision to undertake short or long term work is entirely yours.

What happens if I want to end counselling?
Counselling can be a challenging process and sometimes people feel relief at sharing their problems and think that further sessions are not necessary.  Others may feel a little bit worse as they begin to discuss difficult issues and become anxious about continuing.  Whatever your experience is it is worth discussing your thoughts and feelings with your counsellor, rather than not turning up or cancelling by telephone. Reviewing why you want to finish can often be an important step in understanding and dealing with the problem itself.
